Open Air Series: Outdoors Recreation, A Sustainable Practice
    ShareThis
Did you ever think your bike ride along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail could be contributing to a sustainable community? Have you considered how your purchase of camping gear helped to support the local economy?

The participation in outdoor endeavors such as hiking, biking, camping, and kayaking can play a significant part in regional economic development, social well-being and cohesion, and environmental stewardship. In other words, outdoor recreation contributes toward a sustainable region.

Economic development is the engine to maintaining our standard of living. Investment in outdoor recreation not only supports local businesses and creates jobs, but it also is reciprocated in strengthening the region's fiscal capital. Moreover, a primary advantage of Southwestern PA's geography is that it contributes to talent attraction and retention.

The outdoors is affordable and accessible to all and can aid in connecting people and increasing the sense of community. Society as a whole can improve its health by reversing the detrimental effects caused by lack of physical activity and growing rates of obesity, especially among children.

As Pittsburgh and the surrounding region continue to grow as a leader in "green" initiatives it is crucial to engage more individuals in enjoying the natural amenities that exist. Experiencing the outdoors evokes an understanding about the earth and in effect can lead to a strong desire to protect it. As stewards of the earth it is our obligation to value and sustain its resources and amenities.

Outdoor recreation has the ability to make a sustainable impact in a variety of ways that enables learning, adventure, and fun. With over 200,000 acres of nature parks and reserves and an abundance of waterways, our region is a haven for experiencing the outdoors. Step outside of your walls and enjoy the freedom of the open air.
