| In the last month, people who love to spend time in outdoor parks-both urban and rural-got some great news. In late April, the state of Pennsylvania acquired a 10-acre tract next to Moraine State Park's Slippery Rock Creek Natural Area in Butler County, which will be incorporated into the park's existing area. In downtown Pittsburgh, PNC Financial Services has agreed to build another public park at the Corner of Fifth and Liberty Avenues, which will be used for relaxation and as a place for people and their pups to hang out. Though the downtown park is still being designed, current plans include benches, drought-resistant plants and pet areas. According to an article about the park by Dan Fitzpatrick in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the bank believes that adding greenery to this area will give people another reason to move downtown. The park is expected to be completed in 2010. The 10-acres that will be added to Moraine State Park were recently deeded to the state by the Wild Waterways Conservancy, and are commonly known as Taggart Tract. According to a news release from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the tract will serve as a buffer against development and assist with open-space preservation and groundwater protection and recharge. With so many areas being developed so quickly, it's wonderful to see that some of that space, even in the middle of the city, is being preserved as a place where people can relax in the great outdoors. Support this type of responsible development by getting outside and enjoying it! |
