| If you've been looking for an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, there's no better time than this Friday to get started. From Friday, May 16th through Sunday, May 25th, all of Pittsburgh will be celebrating Great Outdoors Week, sponsored by Sustainable Pittsburgh and its outdoor recreation partners. So what can you do during this 'weekend' without end? You can learn to row or rock climb; participate in a bike ride along the great Allegheny Passage, or learn how to identify local songbirds on a bird watch hike. While there are numerous outdoor events going on all around town (because Pittsburgh is just like that), there are five special 'signature' events that are guaranteed to really get you off the couch and to get moving. For example: Friday, May 16 - National Bike to Work Day - Start off the celebration of Great Outdoors Week on your bike during National Bike to Work Day, hosted by Bike Pittsburgh on Friday, May 16. Stop by REI in the Southside Works between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. for a free Biker Appreciation Breakfast and giveaways! For information, visit www.bike-pgh.org. Saturday, May 17 - 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. - Venture Outdoors Festival - The region's premier outdoor recreation event will be held rain or shine on Washington's Landing. This free event features canoeing, kayaking, biking, dragon boats, rock climbing, fishing and much more. For information, visit www.ventureoutdoors.org. Sunday, May 18 - 6:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Pedal Pittsburgh - This fun cycling event sponsored by Community Design Center of Pittsburgh draws thousands of riders celebrating design, health, fitness and urban lifestyles. The event is a ride, not a race, with distances for everyone ranging from 6 to 60 miles. The fee structure is available on CDCP's website at www.cdcp.org. Tuesday, May 20 - 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. - "Learn to Row" Indoor Session - Try rowing in Three Rivers Rowing Association's indoor rowing tanks and on rowing machines at its Millvale Training Facility. For information, visit www.threeriversrowing.org. Sunday, May 25 - Noon - 5 p.m. - Rachel's Sustainable Feast - Rain or Shine - Bring your appetite for great local food to the Rachel Carson Homestead in Springdale! Enjoy the best from Pittsburgh's chefs who are committed to buying locally. You'll also find local farmers' markets and as many of the region's environment, conservation and fair-trade organizations that can be squeezed into one block party. Cost is $5/person, children under 5 FREE. For more information on Great Outdoors Week, visit www.greatoutdoorsweek.org. |
